2repliesKoon Seng Road: before 8am or do not botherThe pastel shophouse row is still worth shooting but only in a narrow window. After about 8am the residents' cars are back along the kerb and there is no angle that hides them.
Two things that are not on the spot page. First, shoot from the odd-numbered side — the light wraps the facades instead of flattening them. Second, this is somebody's street. People live there and they are visibly tired of photographers. Keep your voice down and do not set up a tripod in a driveway.

Before I spend another Saturday on the MRT — is there anything genuinely good west of the city, or is the honest answer that I should just travel?@bestlight1mo ago2repliesFort Canning Tree Tunnel — the times that actually workPosting this because I wasted two mornings learning it. The queue at the tree tunnel is real and it forms much earlier than you expect on weekends.
Weekday before 8:30am I had it to myself for about twenty minutes. Same spot on a Sunday at 9am there were eleven people in line and everyone gets roughly ninety seconds. If you only have weekends, get there at opening and accept you are shooting fast.
Shoot from the mid-landing, not the bottom — the canopy circle only closes properly from there.@bestlight2mo ago3repliesConey Island — gates open 7am, and area C is the one you wantWorth knowing before you plan a sunrise there: the gates open at 7am and sunrise is around 7:05. So you cannot actually shoot sunrise inside the park. Everyone finds this out on the morning.
What does work is going in at opening and shooting the first hour of light instead. Area C has the bleached driftwood on the beach and it is by some distance the best foreground on the island. About twenty-five minutes' walk in from the west gate.@bestlight2mo ago2repliesMacRitchie TreeTop Walk — what nobody tells you about the timingThe bridge itself is one-way and it opens at 9am, which sounds fine until you realise the walk in takes well over an hour from the carpark. So the earliest you are actually on the bridge is around 10:15, and by then the light is already hard and overhead.
I have stopped shooting the bridge and started shooting the walk in. The boardwalk sections catch low side-light before 8am and there is nobody there.@bestlight2mo ago3repliesLorong Halus only works on a windless morningThe red bridge shot everyone posts — mirror-still water doubling the whole structure — needs the reservoir to be completely flat, and that is maybe one morning in four.
I have started checking the wind the night before rather than just the sunrise time. Under about 5km/h and it mirrors. Above that you get texture on the water and the reflection breaks up.
Centre the deck for the symmetry, just before the sun is properly up.@bestlight2mo ago
