Posting this because I wasted two mornings learning it. The queue at the tree tunnel is real and it forms much earlier than you expect on weekends. Weekday before 8:30am I had it to myself for about twenty minutes. Same spot on a Sunday at 9am there were eleven people in line and everyone gets roughly ninety seconds. If you only have weekends, get there at opening and accept you are shooting fast. Shoot from the mid-landing, not the bottom — the canopy circle only closes properly from there.
Confirming the weekday timing. I was there 8:10am on a Thursday and had it completely to myself. One thing to add — if it rained overnight the metal stairs are slick and everyone in the queue is impatient. Not the morning to be setting up slowly.
This is the kind of post I was hoping existed. Went Monday 8am on the strength of it and got the shot on my second try. Thank you for writing it down.
