Full moon over the Straits

One spot, one evening, one thing worth waiting for — and the shortest kind of walk there is. On 28 August the moon is full at 100% and rises at 7:18pm, nine minutes after the sun sets at 7:09pm. That gap is the entire plan. Wait for a moon that rises an hour after sunset and you photograph a white disc against black; catch it in those nine minutes and it comes up through colour, with dusk not closing until 7:30pm. It rises at 97.6° — just south of due east, straight out over the shipping lanes. From the jetty there is nothing between you and it.

Marina Bay, golden to blue

Four stops, 1.25km, all of it on foot along the waterfront. Read the timings honestly: golden hour opens at 6:42pm and the sun is down by 7:09pm, and blue hour here is about twenty minutes, not an hour. So this is not four blue-hour photographs — it is two in warm light and two in blue, and the walk is ordered so the two spots that need blue actually get it. If you are running late, skip Jubilee and start at the Merlion. Losing the first stop costs you least.

Little India to Kampong Glam, with dinner

Two spots about a kilometre apart, timed so the second one lands in blue hour, and supper one minute from where you finish. Start at the Tan Teng Niah house while the light is still soft — it is painted in eight colours and hard afternoon sun flattens all of them. Walk the 13 minutes to Bussorah Street and set up for the mosque as the sky goes. Then eat: Zam Zam has been on that corner since 1908 and is a minute from the frame. This is the shape a lot of good evenings take — a photograph, a walk, another photograph, and somewhere to sit down afterwards.
