Why do my Cloud Forest shots look flat?

@bestlight · 2mo ago

Everything I shoot inside Cloud Forest comes out grey and lifeless. Correct exposure, sharp, and completely boring. The waterfall is right there and somehow the photo has no depth at all. Is this a light problem or am I standing in the wrong place?

Light. Mist with light coming from behind it glows; mist with light coming from behind you is just grey soup. You are almost certainly front-lighting it. Move around until the light source is on the far side of the mist from you. The spot page notes the mist bursts on the half hour and that backlit is what to aim for — that is the whole trick.

Also go at 9am opening. Not for the crowds, for the light angle — it comes in much lower through the glass early and gets flatter as the sun climbs.

Backlighting it was the answer. Went at opening and waited for the half-hour burst with the sun behind it. First frames out of that place I actually like.
