Rain gear — this matters four months of the year and nobody talks about it

@bestlight · 2mo ago

Half the good skies here arrive attached to a thunderstorm. I have lost one body to water already and I would rather other people did not. What is actually working for you? Not looking for brand recommendations, more interested in what people do in practice when it opens up mid-shoot.

Shower cap over the body, hair tie to hold it. Weighs nothing, costs nothing, lives permanently in the bag. Not elegant and it has saved me repeatedly. The bigger risk is the bag, not the camera. Most bags are not waterproof and a wet bag ruins everything in it over the next hour.

Silica packs in the bag, replaced monthly. The damage here is not the downpour, it is going from 32°C outside to an air-conditioned MRT with a warm lens. That condensation gets inside the lens and stays there. Let the gear come up to temperature in the bag before you open it.

The condensation point is the one I keep learning the hard way. Every single time I get on the train straight after a shoot.
