Is a 70-200 worth carrying just for Old Hill Street?

The spot page says 70-200mm flat-on for the rainbow windows and I can see why — you want the grid compressed and square with no perspective falling away. But that is a heavy lens to carry across town for one building. Can I get close enough with a 24-70 at the long end, or does that miss the point entirely?

It misses the point. At 70mm from across River Valley Road you still get enough perspective that the grid tapers, and the whole appeal is that it does not taper. That said — you do not need 200. Around 135 is enough. If you have anything in that range it will do.

Contrary view: shoot it at 35mm and stop pretending the building is flat. Everyone posts the same compressed grid. The version with the street in it is more interesting and nobody makes it.

Took both suggestions out on Sunday. The compressed one is the better photograph and the wider one is the better picture of a place, which I did not expect to be a distinction that mattered.
