Is 16-35 enough for Supertree Grove or do I need to go wider?

@bestlight · 1mo ago

The spot page recommends 14-24mm ultra-wide for Supertree Grove and all I have is a 16-35. Is 16mm actually going to fall short, or is that recommendation assuming you want the whole canopy in one frame? Also noticed it says tripods are banned weekends and public holidays, which is the only time I can go. Is that enforced or is it one of those signs everyone ignores?

16mm is fine. The 14-24 recommendation assumes you are lying on the ground shooting straight up and want the full canopy. If you are shooting from standing height, 16mm is already wider than the composition needs. The tripod ban is enforced. I have been moved on twice. Weekends they have staff walking the grove.

Adding to that — you do not need a tripod there anyway. Garden Rhapsody is bright enough to shoot handheld at f/2.8, and the show runs 7:45pm so you have blue hour behind the trees if you get there early. Handheld also means you can move during the show, which matters more than sharpness for that subject.
