First camera, no idea where to start in Singapore

@bestlight · 2mo ago

Bought a used body and a kit lens last month and have taken maybe forty photos, all of them bad. I do not really know what I am doing wrong, only that the results look nothing like what is on this site. Is there a sensible first spot for someone who has never shot anything properly? I keep going to Marina Bay at random times and getting nothing.

Random times is the actual problem, not the camera. Marina Bay at 2pm is a hard, flat, contrasty mess and no equipment fixes that. Pick one spot and go at the time the page tells you. Merlion Park at sunrise is the easiest possible start — the light does the work, and the crowds that make it miserable at sunset are not there yet.

Also: go back to the same spot three times before you try a new one. Almost everything you learn early is about a place, not about photography, and you cannot learn a place in one visit.

Been going to Merlion Park at sunrise for three weekends now. Still not great but the last set is recognisably better than the first, and I can finally see why the time matters. Sticking with it.
